Scent Tips for Hunters

First off it should be noted that you cannot completely eliminate human odor, you can only minimize it.

1. Don't eat spicy foods because it will ooze out through the pores of your skin .

2. Wash with a non-scented soap like Ivory or one of the many scent control shampoo's available.

3. Brush your teeth with baking soda. If there are apple trees in your deer hunting area, eat apples as they are natures breath freshener.

Suck on a piece of apple when hunting.

4. Keep hunting clothing clean and odor free by washing it in baking soda or Sport Wash. DO NOT wash your camo clothing in any of the supermarket detergents that have ultraviolet brightners. Deer  will see your cloths glowing in the UV segment of the colour spectrum.

 5. Store your hunting clothes in a tote with some pine, spruce or cedar branches.

 6. A great cover scent is fox urine. This works very well . The fox pose no threat to deer and the urine is an odor that deer encounter all the time .

 7. Racoon urine also works very well.

 8. PLAY THE WIND.

Most Effective Scent Killers

In a recent lab test, the most effective scent killer proved to be " Scent-A-Way Original Formula " followed in second place by " Primos Silver Scent Eliminator ".  This was due to their effectiveness in killing odour causing bacteria. The home formulas such as the one listed below where not as good but still did a good job as compared to several other store bought products.

Make Your Own Scent Killer Spray

2 cups (16 ounces) 3% hydrogen peroxide
2 cups (16 ounces) distilled water
½ cup baking soda
1 ounce unscented shampoo (available at drug or health-food stores)

Mix ingredients in a large pot or bowl until the baking soda has completely dissolved. Pour the solution into a 1-gallon container with a lid ( distilled water jug). Let it sit for three days with the lid on loosly to allow gases out.

Then you will need a plastic bottle (with a trigger sprayer) with the mixture. The bottle has to be clean with nothing ever being in it so you're better off buying a new one. You will still have to sterilize your spray bottle.
