DEER VOCALIZATION

Antler Growth

Deer anlers can grow an inch or more per day. Bucks that grow spikes like in the above photo, can grow a normal muliple tine rack the following year. Spikes are not genetically inferior.

Bucks take minerals from their skeleton to harden their antlers in late summer.

Seven Reasons For Bad Antlers

1. late birth

2. hard winter

3. genetics

4. poor mothers

5. sickness

6. poor food / starvation

7. overpopulation

Antlers change as bucks age

Bucks have a major jump in antler growth every year from ages 1 1/2 to 3 1/2. Most whitetails in this age group will have typical symmetrical antlers, free of sticker points and drop tines. Antlers can be abnormal before a buck reaches the age of 3 1/2. At age 4 mass, split brow tines, forked main points, stickers and drop tines begin showing up on bucks antlers.

When will a buck grow its largest set of antlers?  On average peak antler growth doesn't occur until age 7.

Golden Estrus Brings in the Deer

I snaped off a branch at this trail cam site and poured some Golden Estrus on the broken limb. This young buck came in to investigate. Two does came in also to sniff the same limb. Here are two video's of these events. Click on the utube links.
