Improving deer management in southern Ontario going forward
The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters will be submitting the following recommendations to the provincial government.
(Where it is acceptable to hunters, farmers, and district deer managers in the Southern Region)
- Replacing controlled deer hunt W.M.U .with open regular seasons.
- Amending the hunting regulations to allow bow hunting during controlled deer shotgun and /or muzzle loader seasons.
New Winter Seasons
Where present levels of deer hunting and harvest are insufficient to control ongoing deer population growth, the O.F.A.H. recommends
adding new early January deer hunting seasons in the following W.M.U.'s : 69,70,71,72A,72B,73,74A,78D,78E,80,82B,84,85A,85B,85C,87A,87B,87C,87D,87E,88,89A,89B,90A,90B,91A,91B,92A,92B,
92C,93A,93B,(93C),94A,94B. A special January firearm license/separate seal should be required.
The O.F.A.H. also recommends the use of phone - in reporting to make deer harvest reporting easier for hunters.
Measure all the way around the deers chest/belly/back just behind its front legs to get the girth. Print out the chart, use a soft tape, put them in a baggie to carry with you .
